extracorporeal shock wave therapy
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment used by physicians and physical therapist for over two decades to treat a wide variety of conditions from kidney and gallstones to musculoskeletal issues such as tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy, or ESWT, is especially beneficial to repair overworked or injured muscles and tendons. It works by sending shock waves into bone or soft tissue, reaching into the cellular level to break up scar tissue and accelerate the body’s normal healing process while diminishing pain and discomfort.
The focused shockwave method, which is used at Advanced Body Solutions, uses a very focused impulse to target affected areas. ESWT is often used by athletes whose injuries are not responding to first line treatments, such as rest, ice, therapeutic exercise & bracing, but who are not yet ready to consider more invasive or surgical options. Most require a series of treatment each of which last less than 30 minutes, typically once a week for three weeks. If they have improvement with three sessions but haven’t achieved the desired level of symptom relief, it can be continued as needed. It has also shown efficacy in aiding other musculoskeletal issues. If chronic tendon or arthritic pain has kept you from resuming a fully active lifestyle, ESWT could provide another pathway to optimal recovery.
